When I was given my first piano in 1985 on my 7th birthday I knew that I was going to have a
very special relationship with the instrument. My piano seemed magically alive but mysteriously
complex. Those that could rouse the instrument to produce beautiful music gained my utmost respect
as I listened in awe.

Over time I found that I could connect with the piano and play the feelings that passed through me
without being overly concerned with the notes over which my fingers travelled.

Whilst this experimental way of playing was initially rather clumsy and brutal, as I took lessons
and created a grounded ability to play conventionally, the improvisations flowed more freely.

When I play now, I connect with an energetic space that will be familiar to those who meditate,
a state of heightened presence and open awareness. From this space I allow the music to flow and
the result is a unique freeform improvisation.
